Nearly thirty years ago…

after a year of praying and seeking God’s guidance for what was next, and thinking it would be neat to run a camp “like” Camp Cyokamo, Scott and Sue Roughton became the camp managers of Camp Cyokamo in March of 1996. But, their service at Camp Cyokamo started decades earlier.

When Sue was just a girl her mom would park a pop-up camper next to the kitchen and would volunteer her time prepping food for the campers while Sue and her sister would run around the camp.

Not long after that, Sue was baptized in the old pool as a 4th grader, and later, when she was a senior in high school, committed her life to full-time Christian service while at a week of camp.

When Scott and Sue were dating, they would often come out to the camp and work on various projects wherever they were needed. In 1979, the year they got married, they were dorm parents and sponsors.

Camp Cyokamo had played such an important role in their lives to this point, and God still had big plans for Camp Cyokamo and the Roughtons.

After nineteen and a half years as a fireman, Scott suffered a knee injury that forced him to find another line of work. This was a time of intense prayer for what was next, and a year later they started as camp managers.

For the past 27 years, Scott and Sue have seen God work in miraculous ways. They’ve seen lives changed by the power of the gospel, with many students and sponsors getting baptized at camp, and have experienced first hand God’s provision as the camp remains debt free.

When asked if there was anything they’d like to say to everyone who has attended Camp Cyokamo in the last 27 years, Scott and Sue said it’s their prayer that everyone felt safe and loved while at camp, that everyone has nothing but good memories, and that everyone always grew closer to Christ.

It’s true that Camp Cyokamo has had an immeasurable impact on the Roughton’s lives, but it’s also true that Camp Cyokamo has been tremendously blessed by the lifetime of Christ-like devotion and service of Scott and Sue Roughton. So, on behalf of the over 32,000 campers, interns, and sponsors you’ve served the last 27 years as camp managers, thank you for advancing the Kingdom of God by pointing people to Christ.
